Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
