Revitalized Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition title decider.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult period, achieving just one win at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.

The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in particular - caused him exiting of the top ten and ultimately parting ways with long-time trainer Cervara.

Currently training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set win over challenger Corentin Moutet.

It is the player's maiden trophy after the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from March of the previous year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has secured twenty-one titles at twenty-one different competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my children together, so to win a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his last six title deciders, including in Halle previously this season.

The player's counter-punching approach and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had caused commentators to question if his ability to compete at the elite level was finished.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, winning four of the final five games to gain the advantage.

The pair swapped service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial professional title, seized the initiative to create a third set.

He rescued 4 early chances in a tight deciding set before the champion won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Suitably, he earned victory with a rally at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
