Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Global Strict Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they stated.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," they remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and concealment."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they told the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," they stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
