Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
