The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
